FPU Falls Short in Pitcher’s Duel

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno Pacific fell to sixth-ranked California Baptist 3-1 on Wednesday night at FPU Diamond. Jake Martinez delivered a quality start for the Sunbirds on the hill, but the senior was outdueled by CBU's Tyson Miller who entered the night as a top prospect across all collegiate divisions.

FPU moves to 20-22 overall and 15-13 in the PacWest following the setback. CBU, who entered the game as the top-ranked team in the West Region, improves to 34-9 overall and 24-5 in league action with the win.

Martinez went 7.0 innings and struck out five for FPU, but was on the wrong end of the decision after allowing three earned runs. A two-run home run by CBU's Antonio Chavarria in the top of the fourth proved to be the difference.

Leo Carrillo extended his hitting streak to 20 games with a 2-for-4 performance for the Sunbirds. He added an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth for FPU's only run of the evening.

Miller went 8.0 innings, allowing six hits and one earned run for his eighth win of the year for the Lancers. He struck out eight. Brody Robinson earned his fifth save of the season with three strikeouts in the ninth.

FPU and CBU continue the four-game PacWest series tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
