Sunbird Women Prepare to Open Conference Schedule

5FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific University women's basketball team will play a non-conference game this week before playing two PacWest contests in three days.

SCHEDULE NOTES
After this week, the Sunbirds travel to Concordia for the first conference road game before a road exhibition against NCAA Division I CSU Bakersfield on Dec. 10.
 
The Sunbirds visit Riverside to take on California Baptist on Dec. 17 before wrapping up the non-conference portion of the schedule with Antelope Valley and UC Merced on the 19th and 30th respectively. The new year begins with Dixie State and Holy Names at home before a visit to Point Loma on Jan. 9.
 
Senior Day for the Sunbirds comes on Feb. 25 against Notre Dame de Namur, with the PacWest Conference Tournament beginning on March 1 in Irvine. To view the schedule in its entirety, please click here.    
 
ABOUT THE SUNBIRDS (1-4)
Fresno Pacific turned in its best game of the year on Saturday, earning a 73-62 victory over San Francisco State to collect the first victory under head coach Tim Beauregard. Bree Alvarez continued her recent hot streak, going for a career-high 26 points to score at least 20 for the third consecutive game. Cassie Pisik scored all 18 of her points from the floor, finishing behind only Alvarez as the game's second-leading scorer. Alvarez leads the team in scoring for the season, averaging 17.6 PPG, while Hannah Ramirez 5.8 rebounds per game put her atop the Sunbird leaderboard.
 
ABOUT THE KEELHAULERS
Cal Maritime has struggled in the early part of the season, dropping each of their first eight contests so far. Most recently, the Keelhaulers fell 81-65 against Notre Dame de Namur on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. Three CSUM player scored in double-figures, highlighted by Amber Herrly's team-high 19 points. She currently leads the team with 12.4 points per game and 15 steals on the year.
 
SERIES HISTORY: FPU VS. CAL MARITIME
The Sunbirds have never lost to Cal Maritime, claiming a 5-0 record in the all-time series. The most recent meeting between the two teams came in Fresno in 2011, when the Blue and Orange came away with a convincing 85-53 victory.    
 
ABOUT THE URBAN KNIGHTS
Art U has played a tough schedule in the early part of the season, struggling to a 1-4 record along the way. Rodericka Ware has averaged 12.6 PPG so far, while Helena Orts has collected a team-best 7.4 rebounds per game. Most recently, the Urban Knights won the opening game of the Thanksgiving Shootout at Cal State East Bay. Academy of Art knocked off Humboldt State 73-62 om Saturday, with Jazzlyn Brewster's 17 points ending up as a game-high.  
 
SERIES HISTORY: FPU VS. ACADEMY OF ART
The Sunbirds have never defeated the Urban Knights through five all-time meetings. The most recent matchup saw Art U cruise to a 28-point victory in San Francisco last December, though three Sunbirds scored in double-figures.
 
ABOUT THE SEA LIONS
PLNU has started the 2016-17 in midseason form, winning five of their first six games. The lone Sea Lion loss of the year came against Cal State Los Angeles last Friday in the Thanksgiving Classic, but the Green and Gold rebounded with an 81-70 victory over host Cal State Dominguez Hills the following afternoon. Five individuals are averaging at least ten points per game so far, including Kassidy Gengenbacher scoring 12.5 PPG off the bench.  
 
SERIES HISTORY: FPU VS. POINT LOMA
Point Loma has won 40 of the 72 all-time meetings between the Sunbirds and Sea Lions, including three of the last four. Last season in Fresno, Hannah Ramirez went for 14 points and eight rebounds, but the Sea Lions outlasted FPU and came away with a 72-60 victory.    
 
HEAD COACH TIM BEAUREGARD
In his first year as the head coach of the Sunbirds, Beauregard returned to FPU after previously serving as an assistant from 2006-10. During a head coaching transition following his final season as the lead assistant at FPU, Beauregard oversaw the program for a brief period, landing top recruit Jenay Herring who went on to become FPU's second all-time leading scorer.
 
Following his time at FPU, Beauregard was hired as the lead assistant at Azusa Pacific University where he was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the program, including scheduling, recruiting, scouting and practice planning. The Cougars went on to win the 2011 NAIA National Championship after finishing as the national runner-up in 2010.
 
Beauregard is well connected in the women's basketball world and has served as camp director for nationally-recognized NBC Camps since 2005. He has run over 50 overnight camps and clinics ranging from Canada to Colorado to Southern California, and several spots in between. While at NBC Camps, Beauregard combined and emphasized basketball training with psychological and spiritual training to develop integrity and confidence in his student-athletes.
