FPU Women’s Hoops Looks Ahead to Wildcats, Gators

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific University women's basketball team will two non-conference games this week, a road contest against Chico State on Tuesday before hosting San Francisco State on Saturday afternoon.

SCHEDULE NOTES
After this week, the Sunbirds continue the non-conference schedule Cal Maritime before opening PacWest play at home on Dec. 1 against Academy of Art. A pair of league games follow before a road exhibition against NCAA Division I CSU Bakersfield on Dec. 10.
 
The Sunbirds visit Riverside to take on California Baptist on Dec. 17 before wrapping up the non-conference portion of the schedule with Antelope Valley and UC Merced on the 19th and 30th respectively. The new year begins with Dixie State and Holy Names at home before a visit to Point Loma on Jan. 9.
 
Senior Day for the Sunbirds comes on Feb. 25 against Notre Dame de Namur, with the PacWest Conference Tournament beginning on March 1 in Irvine. To view the schedule in its entirety, please click here.    
 
ABOUT THE SUNBIRDS (0-3)
Fresno Pacific was unable to stage a late comeback on Friday night, falling 68-56 on the road at the hands of Cal State Monterey Bay. The Sunbirds played turned in their most productive game of the young season, however, posting season-bests in points (56), rebounds (35) and turnovers (12). Bree Alvarez put up a career-high 20 points, while freshman Ashley Cross added 12 points and a team-high seven boards.  
 
ABOUT THE WILDCATS (4-1)
Chico State began the season with an 80-76 exhibition victory over NCAA Division I University of the Pacific and have rattled off a 4-1 record since. In Saturday's 65-55 victory over Dixie State, three Wildcats scored in double-figures, highlighted by Natalie Valenzuela's game-high 15 points. Chico State has yet to be outrebounded in a game this season, with Valenzuela and McKenna Barker combining to haul in 13 boards per game. Dating back to the 2012-13 season, the Wildcats are 12-2 against schools in the PacWest Conference.
 
SERIES HISTORY: FPU VS. CHICO STATE
The Sunbirds claim a 3-2 advantage in the all-time series, with the most recent meeting coming in Fresno last season. The Blue and Orange came away with a 66-64 victory to hand the Wildcats one of their seven losses last winter, and three Sunbirds scored in double-figures.   
 
ABOUT THE GATORS (1-4)
San Francisco State has struggled in the early part of the season, with their lone victory coming against Holy Names on Nov. 15. Most recently, the Gators fells 77-56 to Dominican on Saturday evening, with Donae Moguel narrowly missing a double-double. Imani Smith and Jasmine Black combined for 26 points as the only Gators in double-figures, but 31 turnovers proved costly. Lauryn Catching currently leads the team with 12.6 points per game as SFSU continues to share in the ball offensively.
 
SERIES HISTORY: FPU VS. SAN FRANCISCO STATE
The Sunbirds stand 1-1 all-time against San Francisco State, though the two-schools have not met since the 1988-89 season.    
 
HEAD COACH TIM BEAUREGARD
In his first year as the head coach of the Sunbirds, Beauregard returned to FPU after previously serving as an assistant from 2006-10. During a head coaching transition following his final season as the lead assistant at FPU, Beauregard oversaw the program for a brief period, landing top recruit Jenay Herring who went on to become FPU's second all-time leading scorer.
 
Following his time at FPU, Beauregard was hired as the lead assistant at Azusa Pacific University where he was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the program, including scheduling, recruiting, scouting and practice planning. The Cougars went on to win the 2011 NAIA National Championship after finishing as the national runner-up in 2010.
 
Beauregard is well connected in the women's basketball world and has served as camp director for nationally-recognized NBC Camps since 2005. He has run over 50 overnight camps and clinics ranging from Canada to Colorado to Southern California, and several spots in between. While at NBC Camps, Beauregard combined and emphasized basketball training with psychological and spiritual training to develop integrity and confidence in his student-athletes.
