Sunbirds take early lead, but fall to #10 Warriors

TURLOCK, Calif. - Fresno Pacific scored in the fifth minute of the game to take a 1-0 lead on the #10 ranked team in the nation but defending West Region champion Stanislaus State proved to have too much firepower as FPU fell to the Warriors 4-1.

"For the first 30 minutes we were the better team," said head coach Rob Podeyn. "We were able to take the lead and narrowly missed on three or four quality chances. Then we started to run out of steam, but up until that point we were out-shooting them and had better possession. In the second half we came out flat and weren't able to match the level of energy they had. Overall I was encouraged though and if we look at the first 30 minutes and build from that, I believe we can beat anyone in the region. It's going to take time but there are a lot of positives we can take from this."

Amber Rodriguez found the net for the Sunbirds early on after Mariah Montoya and Hannah Coyle broke through the defense. Coyle and Alyssa Nakaguchi each narrowly missed a goal in the early-going as well. The 1-0 lead held until the 24th minute when the Warriors scored the equalizer. Gabby Squarcia would score her second goal of the game for the Warriors just before half to give them a 2-1 lead. The Warriors added goals in the 51st and 83rd minute for the 4-1 final.

FPU was out-shot 10-8 in the first half, but 8-2 in the second half (18-10 overall). Selena Braun made seven saves in goal for the Sunbirds.

Montoya and Nakaguchi were named to the all-tournament team.

The Sunbirds have a two-week break in the action before their home opener on Saturday, September 19, when they host UC Santa Cruz at 4 pm.
