HONOLULU – Fresno Pacific received a hat trick from striker
Joey Belzil as the Sunbirds defeated Chaminade, 4-0, Saturday in the PacWest opener for both teams at Saint Louis Field.
FPU picks up its fourth straight victory and moves to 4-1-1 overall and 1-0 in the PacWest. Chaminade falls to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in league action.
Belzil, who entered the game in the 34th minute, scored his first of three goals in the 37th minute of action. The would-be game winner came from 20 yards out and was assisted by
Anthony Velarde. The score marked Belzil's first goal of the season.
Belzil continued his offensive onslaught in the second half with two more goals.
Renato Bustamante assisted Belzil off a corner in the 51st minute and again found the speedy right-footer in the 56th minute to complete his hat-trick. The three goals mark a career game-high for the junior.
Isaiah Asencio tallied the final goal in the 73rd minute to make the final 4-0. It marked the first goal of his career.
FPU picked up its first clean sheet of the season in the win. Freshman
Alex Guillen made his second career start in goal and improved his record to 2-0. The defense only allowed four shots on the evening, with zero shots coming on goal.
The Sunbirds out-shot the Silverswords 15-4 in the win. FPU generated five corner kick opportunities.
FPU travels to Hawaii Hilo on the big island on Monday, Sept. 28 to continue its four-game Hawaii road trip.
