HILO, Hawaii – Jorge Chedraui's hat trick powered Fresno Pacific to its fifth-straight win on Monday, as the Sunbirds defeated Hawaii Hilo 3-1 on a wet and windy evening in PacWest play.
FPU improves to 5-1-1 overall and 2-0 in league action with the win, while UHH falls to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in the PacWest.
"Given the conditions we were facing, I was pleased with our ability to earn the result we wanted," said head coach
Jaime Ramirez. "Hawaii Hilo was very direct and jumped on us early. Despite the opening goal and deficit, I felt we had control of the game and knew it was a matter of time before we found the net. We managed to limit our mistakes, stay patient and rely on each other to create the offensive chances to equalize and eventually take the lead. Jorge did a great job of finishing tonight and really came up big for us."
The Vulcans scored the first goal of the evening in the 28th minute as Jamie Sporcic slipped past the defense to find the net. The Sunbirds answered two minutes later, however, as Chedraui made a run and was rewarded with a through ball from
Renato Bustamante. The junior buried the pass into the net to equalize in the 30th minute.
Chedraui wasted no time in giving the Sunbirds the lead, as the striker scored five minutes later to put FPU up 2-1.
Sergi Nus and Bustamante were credited with the assists. Chedraui topped off his three-goal night in the 41st minute with a breakaway goal that was assisted from
Alvaro Nogales to make the final 3-1.
The hat trick, which was recorded in a span of 11 minutes, marked the third of his career and first this season. Chedraui currently leads the Sunbirds in goals (8) and points (14).
The Sunbirds out-shot the Vulcans 15-9 and created 15 corner kicks to UHH's one on the night.
Alex Guillen earned his third-straight win in goal and totaled three saves for FPU. The defense drew the Vulcans offside eight times.
The Sunbirds are back in action on Thursday, Oct. 1 at Hawaii Pacific (3:30 p.m. HST, 6:30 p.m. PST).
