SEASIDE, Calif. - Fresno Pacific had the better of the run of play at Cal State Monterey Bay on Wednesday but it wasn't enough to leave with a victory as the Sunbirds fell 2-0 to the Otters in the final non-conference tuneup before PacWest play.
The Otters (3-5) scored early in the first half and early in the second half to earn the victory. Hannah Kind found the net for CSUMB just seven minutes into the match for the early 1-0 lead. Reagan Porteous added a goal seven minutes into the second half to make it 2-0.
"I felt that we dominated possession, shots, corners and overall scoring opportunities," said head coach
Rob Podeyn. "I like the way we're playing as far as creating chances and possessing, but we have to figure out how to finish, that's the bottom line. We had plenty of chances today."
Alyssa Nakaguchi led the team with four shots and
Hannah Coyle had a game-high two shots on goal as the Sunbirds created numerous chances. FPU out-shot the Otters 14-12 in the loss and had seven corners to CSUMB's two.
"Overall we're playing well and we know what areas we need to improve upon," said Podeyn. "I'm not concerned about our effort, our fitness level or our ability to defend. We've just got to keep working on our finishing ability."
The Sunbirds begin a four-game road trip to Hawaii this weekend as they take on Chaminade in the PacWest opener on Saturday.
