FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno Pacific wrapped up its non-conference schedule with a win over Westmont, 3-2, Saturday at Ramirez Field. The Sunbirds overcame a one-goal deficit while playing a man-down the entire second half to earn the win.
Â
FPU improves to 3-1-1 overall on the year with the win. The Warriors, former NAIA and Golden State Athletic Conference rivals, fall to 3-2-1 overall.
Â
"The momentum we have been able to gather these last three games and seeing we are capable of producing goal-scoring opportunities and converting them is encouraging," said head coach
Jaime Ramirez. "Westmont is a very good team and I really enjoyed the match. We share such a great tradition with them and tonight was just another classic in the history of our programs."
Â
Westmont held a 2-1 advantage at the half before the Sunbirds stormed back for the win. FPU equalized in the 54th minute after
Martin Kams dribbled into the box and netted his first goal of the year. The game-winner came only three minutes later from
Jorge Chedraui, who fired a free kick from 30 yards out just past the goalie to make the final 3-2. The junior from Ecuador is riding a three-game scoring streak and leads the Sunbirds in points with 11.
Â
Renato Bustamante scored the opening goal for FPU in the 33rd minute on a free kick from just outside the box. The senior has now tallied four goals in his last three games.
Â
Alex Guillen made his first career start in goal for the Sunbirds and totaled six saves. The defense forced the Warriors offsides 13 times in the match.
Â
The Warriors held a 15-14 advantage in shots, while FPU generated six corner kicks to Westmont's three.
Â
