AZUSA, Calif. – Fresno Pacific suffered a doubleheader sweep against Azusa Pacific Thursday in non-conference action at the Cougar Baseball Complex. The Sunbirds dropped the opener 11-4 before APU earned a walk-off win in the nightcap, 6-5.
FPU falls to 32-17 overall following the pair of setbacks, while APU moves to 31-18.
In the opener, the Cougars tallied 10 runs in their final three innings to make the difference. The Sunbirds opened the scoring with a
Steven Lozier two-run home run in the third inning and led 3-1 after 6.5 innings before APU stormed back.
Michael Tittle blasted solo homers in the sixth and ninth innings, respectively, for FPU.
Tittle led the Sunbirds' offense with his two hits and two RBI, while Lozier,
Michael Hostetler and
Baron Bower recorded a hit apiece.
Kyle Rasmussen (4-3) took the loss for FPU in 1.1 innings of relief and allowed four earned runs.
Drew Merlo started and went 5.1 innings allowing six hits, three earned run and struck out three.
The Cougars received a complete game from Jacob CageÂ
(7-3) on the hill. APU hit three homers and received two RBI and three hits from Ryan Santana.
The Sunbirds led 5-4 after six innings in the nightcap, but surrendered a run in the seventh and another in the eighth to fall 6-5 in extra frames.
Tanner Irwin took the loss in relief to fall to 3-2 on the year. The righty surrendered two earned runs in 2.2 innings of work and struck out three.
Josh Medeles earned a no-decision after throwing five innings with four earned runs while striking out four.
The Sunbirds pounded out 11 hits but left seven runners on base in the loss. Hostetler led the offense with three hits and two RBI, while
John Koretoff finished 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Preston Scott tallied three hits and Bower was 2-for-5 with an RBI.
APU countered with nine hits and three homers, including a 2-for-4, two RBI showing from Santana. Closer Josh Grejada earned the win in relief with one shutout inning.
The two teams wrap up the series and regular season play tomorrow with a single game starting at 2 p.m. in Azusa.Â
