Sunbirds come from behind to knock off Gators

SAN FRANCISCO - Fresno Pacific scored twice in the seventh and twice in the eighth to pick up a 7-4 come-from-behind victory at San Francisco State on Friday. Michael Tittle went 3-for-5 with two RBI, while Michael Hostetler and John Koretoff each added two hits and an RBI.

FPU starter Jake Martinez (2-0) labored through six innings, giving up 11 hits and four runs while striking out four, but shut the Gators down in his final three innings of work to earn the win. Eian Raeber and Kyle Rasmussen provided quality work out of the bullpen to get to closer Tanner Irwin, who picked up the save with a scoreless ninth.

"Jake didn't have his best stuff today but he really battled and made some big pitches to keep us in the game," said head coach Oscar Hirschkorn. "Our bullpen did what it's done all year and we came up with some good at-bats late. Defensively we played well, got some big double plays and a huge catch in left field by Nate Case."

The Sunbirds took a 2-0 lead in the second inning before giving up four runs in the bottom of the third. FPU trailed 4-2 until the sixth, when Koretoff delivered an RBI single to bring the team within one. The Sunbirds regained the lead in the seventh when Hostetler singled down the right field line with the bases loaded. The team loaded the bases again in the eighth, when Tittle delivered two more runs with a single to left.

Mark Lindsey went 3-for-4 to lead the Gators, who fell to 2-6. Nolan Sheridan (0-3) took the loss.

The Sunbirds improved to 7-2 on the season with the win. The two teams resume play tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 11 am.
