SPU too much for Sunbirds in 89-43 setback

ARCATA, Calif. - Fresno Pacific faced off against a tough GNAC opponent for the second consecutive day, falling 89-43 to Seattle Pacific in the PacWest/GNAC Challenge hosted by Humboldt State.

The Sunbirds (0-2) played well in the first quarter but were outscored 73-29 the rest of the way by a deeper, more experienced Falcons squad. Megan Lee scored 13 points off the bench to lead the Sunbirds and added a team-high six rebounds. Riley Mew and Jasmine Shedrick scored six points apiece, with Shedrick adding four steals.

"We learned a ton in these two games," said head coach Lindsey Wilson. "We played more intense today and had good starts to both games, we just have to learn to sustain that intensity for four quarters."

FPU fell behind 9-4 in the early-going but called a timeout and responded with a 10-0 run that included threes by Lee and Kaysha Fox to give the Sunbirds a 14-9 lead. The Falcons went on a 7-0 run to close the first quarter and proceeded to outscore FPU 23-7 in the second to establish a large lead they would not relinquish.

Courtney Hollander had 13 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Falcons in the win. SPU shot 50% from the field while holding FPU to 31%. The Falcons out-rebounded the Sunbirds 49-26.

The Sunbirds return to Fresno for an exhibition with Fresno State on Tuesday night at the Save Mart Center.
