Mariah Montoya scored two goals to lead FPU to a 3-0 PacWest victory over Dominican on Wednesday. Montoya scored in the 34th and 69th minutes before
Bianka Garcia added another goal in the 74th minute.
Alyssa Nakaguchi had two assists as the Sunbirds improved to 5-3-1, 3-1-1 in PacWest play.
Montoya's first goal came off two quick passes in the box from Nakaguchi and
Jenna Thomason. Montoya fired a shot from point-blank off the keeper's hand to get the Sunbirds on the board, a lead that would hold into halftime.
After a ferocious push by the Penguins (3-6-1, 3-2 PacWest) early in the second half that resulted in nearly 10 shots in a 15-minute span, FPU settled down and Montoya blasted in a shot from just inside the box after a shot by
Hannah Strong deflected back to her. Garcia then scored on a booming shot from outside the box just four minutes later after a pass from Nakaguchi.
"We kind of got away from our style of play when we were in Hawaii due to the poor quality of the fields there," said head coach
Rob Podeyn. "We had to play more of a kick and chase game and we like to play a possession-oriented game. We played to our strengths tonight, it resulted in some quality chances and Mariah came to life and really excelled in her finishing ability. It was great being back home with a lot of support from our crowd. We have a great atmosphere here and we're hoping that can help us build momentum as we head into this stretch of home games."
FPU was exceptional on defense once again, recording its fifth shutout of the season.
The Sunbirds out-shot DUC 25-9, including 15-3 in shots on goal.
The Sunbirds are back in action this Saturday, hosting defending PacWest champion Point Loma at 5 pm.
