FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno Pacific won a pair of non-conference games on Saturday, as the Sunbirds defeated rival Concordia, 11-9, and Delta College, 20-10, at Sunnyside Aquatics Center. Senior
Zlatko Vlasic highlighted the day with a 10-goal effort in the nightcap, which sets a new school record for goals scored in a game.
Â
FPU improves to 9-9 overall with the day sweep and has won seven of its last 10 games.
Â
"We started off really slow after a long week of training and it took us two quarters to really start playing our game," said head coach
Bryan Suhovy. "The whole focus of this week was defense and transition, and I was happy with how we executed today. We did a great job of focusing on isolations and stepping back, while our guys up top were gapping over and putting pressure on the ball. This allowed us to force contested shots, which set up Kevin (Richey) in the cage to make a lot of saves for us."
Â
In the opener against Concordia, the Sunbirds overcame a slow start and held on to defeat the Eagles for only the second time in school history. FPU took a 6-5 advantage into halftime and used a 4-0 run at the end of the third quarter to take control of the game. Concordia mounted a comeback in the final period and came within one at 10-9, but the Sunbirds closed out the win with a goal from Vlasic with 1:32 remaining.
Â
Vlasic,
David Maes, and
Daniel Seymour led the FPU offense with three goals apiece.
Erik Brown and
Kyle Eoff rounded out the scoring with a goal each.
Kevin Richey made his second start in goal this season and tallied 10 saves.
Â
In the nightcap, Delta had no answer for Vlasic who scored at will throughout the game. The Sunbirds had their highest scoring quarter of the season with 10 in the first period and led 16-3 at halftime.
Â
Vlasic's 10 goals broke the previous record of nine held by Nick Fadden. Seymour added a hat trick for FPU, while Maes and
Greg Bracamonte had two scores apiece.
Zach Weaver,
Jamison Shapland and
Jeff Miller rounded out the scoring with a goal each. Richey tallied six saves in the cage.
Â
The Sunbirds are back in action with four games at the Santa Clara Rodeo Tournament next weekend.
