RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific men's water polo team couldn't overcome a scoreless third quarter as the Sunbirds fell to host California Baptist, 10-6, in Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) action on Thursday evening at Lancer Aquatics Center.
FPU falls to 2-6 overall and 1-2 in league play with the loss, while CBU moves to 5-6 overall and 1-1 in the WWPA. The Lancers are currently receiving votes in the national poll.
"We came out strong taking the lead early, but struggled to find our cross passes in the second half," said head coach
Bryan Suhovy. "We had several missed counter-attack opportunities and struggled in our power plays. CBU capitalized on several of our mistakes and that is what got us in the end."
The Sunbirds opened the game with two straight goals from
Erik Brown and
Greg Bracamonte to take a 2-0 lead. FPU extended its lead to 4-2 in the second period following goals from
Kyle Madel and
Steven Kaufmann, but the Lancers answered with a 7-0 run that spanned from a minute to go in the first half into the fourth period to take control of the game.
David Ring led the Lancers with a hat trick, while Joseph Moorman tallied 13 saves in the cage.
FPU received a goal from six different players on the evening in a balanced attack.
David Maes and
Zlatko Vlasic tallied the two final goals in the second half for the Sunbirds. Vlasic also added a pair of assists to his line. The offense sputtered to a 1-for-5 mark in man-up advantages.
Dillon Robinson amassed 16 saves in goal for the Sunbirds.
"I thought Dillon played a great game in the cage for us tonight," said Suhovy. "We will learn from the setback, recover tonight and be ready for the tournament tomorrow."
FPU will play four games at the Gary Troyer Memorial Tournament this weekend, beginning with Pomona-Pitzer tomorrow at 3 p.m.
