Sunbirds fly together, take down Penguins 61-60

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. - Fresno Pacific knocked off Dominican 61-60 on the road Saturday night, snapping a seven-game losing streak. Jenay Herring scored 20 points and Dakota McLarnan added 17 as the Sunbirds (3-14, 3-9 PacWest) built up a 15-point lead in the second half before hanging on for the win.

Sarah Nelson did all she could for the Penguins (9-10, 6-7 PacWest), delivering a monster game with a triple-double of 20 points, 19 rebounds and 10 blocks.

The Sunbirds led by 13 with under nine minutes to play but the Penguins stormed back with a 16-2 run to take a 60-59 lead on a bucket by Nelson with 1:52 to play. Jasmine Shedrick, who finished with 10 points, nine boards and five blocks for FPU, knocked down two free-throws as FPU regained the lead with 1:25 left. Neither team would score in the final minute as a key block by Herring and strong defense sealed the win for the Sunbirds.

FPU led 40-30 at halftime, ending the half on a 10-2 run behind great three point shooting from Herring and McLarnan. The Sunbirds totaled nine threes in the game, shooting 45% from beyond the arc. FPU also out-rebounded the Penguins 47-38, with Danielle Bender contributing eight in the win.

"I'm so excited for this team and where they're headed," said head coach Lindsey Wilson. "For 40 minutes we all held ourselves accountable for our effort and execution. We not only came to play, we played to win."

The Sunbirds return home on Wednesday to face the Penguins for a second time.
