SAN JOSE, Calif. – Fresno Pacific concluded the Lou Tully Memorial Tournament hosted by San Jose State by taking on some of the top competition in the world Saturday. FPU fell to the Chinese National Team, who is ranked #2 in the world by FINA, 17-1 before suffering a setback against #3 Cal, 25-1.

"Today was a very tough day of games, but I felt our athletes rose to the challenge and gained experience," said head coach
Bryan Suhovy. "They executed what we asked them to and worked hard for every opportunity. It was a chance to learn and grow and our team took full advantage of that. We now have direction of where we need to go from here."

Chinese National Team 17, FPU 1Â In the morning against China, the Sunbirds fell behind early and trailed 8-0 after the opening period. FPU jumped on the scoreboard in the second quarter with a goal from
Alyssa Stevens, but were outscored 6-0 in the final two periods to fall 17-1.

Kelsie Harvey totaled five saves and three steals for the Sunbirds in the cage.

Xiong Dunhan and Zhao Zihan led China with four goals apiece.

The contest counted as an exhibition for FPU.

#3 Cal 25, FPU 1In the nightcap, Cal used a 12-0 run to open the game to put away the Sunbirds. Stevens added the lone goal for FPU in the second quarter before Cal finished out the win with 12 second-half scores to make the final 25-1.
Harvey totaled nine blocks and two steals for the Sunbirds in the loss.
Cal received four goals from Dora Antal.

FPU (0-3) is back in action on Saturday, Jan. 31 in Seaside. FPU takes on Santa Clara at 1 p.m. and Cal State Monterey Bay at 4 p.m.
