Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Three second-half goals complete comeback to beat CSUDH, 4-3

FRESNO, Calif. – Down two goals and a man, the Fresno Pacific men's soccer team scored three times in the final 30 minutes to defeat Cal State Dominguez Hills Friday at Ramirez Field. Scores from Nick Watson and Alvaro Nogales tied the game before an own goal by the Toros in the 85th minute completed the comeback and extended the Sunbirds home winning streak to 19 games.

FPU improves to 2-0 with the win, while CSUDH falls to 1-2-1 on the season. The Toros were picked second in the California Collegiate Athletic Association's preseason coaches' poll.

"Hats off to Dominguez Hills, they are a fantastic team," said head coach Jaime Ramirez. "They are one of the better teams in the country year-after-year. For us, tonight was an opportunity to play an opponent and look at the standard of the NCAA Division II."

The Sunbirds led at halftime 1-0 on a Renato Bustamante header, assisted by Joey Belzil just 10 minutes into the match.

The Toros responded with three straight goals to open the second half to lead 3-1 with 30 minutes remaining. Tony Alfaro, Daniel Herrera and Andrew Johnson found the back of the net for CSUDH.

The Sunbirds received a goal from Watson on a laser from 20 yards out to cut the lead to 3-2 at the 61st minute, which changed the momentum of the game and brought FPU back to life.

"I saw an open space and sprinted down the line," said Watson. "Renato fed me a great ball and I cut inside. The defender got a little flat-footed and I was able to turn him and hit it with my right foot, and luckily it went right into the goal. I couldn't have asked for a better way to finish it."

Following a red card issued to Bustamante with 20 minutes remaining, FPU continued to attack despite being down a man. Nogales capitalized on a penalty following a takedown of Jorge Chedraui in the box to knot the game 3-3, before a Watson cross was deflected by a Toro defender into his own net made the difference 4-3.

"This game really showed the character of our team to comeback," said Watson. "It showed being a man down that our team is willing to work for each other. When one of us is down, the other 10 on the field are going to pick each other up and the result showed that."

Andrew Luis (2-0) earned the win in goal and recorded four saves in the win. The Sunbirds were outshot 18-11 on the night.

The game was tough throughout, as there were six cards issued in the match.

"Being down a goal and down a man, to see the heart of these guys that can lay it on the line and get after it and display that desire, particularly from the veterans, not to lose at home was fantastic," said Ramirez. "We made some mistakes and we paid for them. We are going in the right direction, but we still have a lot of work to do."

FPU takes on Sonoma State on Monday, Sept. 15 in its last tune-up before PacWest play begins. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m. at Ramirez Field. The first 50 students in attendance with school ID will receive a pair of Sunbirds sunglasses.
