Sunbirds home winning streak snapped by Sonoma State, 2-1

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno Pacific had its home winning streak of 19 games snapped Monday night as Sonoma State earned a 2-1 win at Ramirez Field. The Sunbirds mounted a comeback behind a goal from senior Guillermo Talancon, but couldn't find the equalizer in the first loss of the year.

FPU falls to 2-1 on the season, while Sonoma State improves to 3-1 with the win.

"Sonoma State is a fantastic team," said head coach Jaime Ramirez. "When you look at how both teams played, it was just wonderful soccer. I'm not as concerned with the win or the loss as I am with the process of where we are at right now."

The Seawolves jumped out to a 2-0 lead with goals from Zanin Mahic and Eric Alvarado. The first score came in the 18th minute to give Sonoma State a 1-0 lead at halftime. The Seawolves wasted no time in scoring in the second half with a goal only 25 seconds into the period.

The Sunbirds tallied a goal from senior Guillermo Talancon in the 52nd minute, but couldn't find the equalizer before the second half expired. FPU attacked often, with a great chance from Alvaro Nogales in the 83rd minute and another on a header from Jorge Chedraui, but couldn't find the equalizer before time expired.

Andrew Luis was given the loss and falls to 2-1 on the year. He made one save on the night. The Sunbirds were outshot 17-10 on the night.

"This game can teach us a ton heading into PacWest play," said Ramirez. "Our goal is to win conference. We will use tonight as a way to show us what we need to do get back on track this weekend in a tough place to play in San Diego."

The Sunbirds begin PacWest play on Saturday, Sept. 20 at Point Loma. The match is slated to begin at 11 a.m.
