Fresno Pacific completed a three-game sweep of Sonoma State on Saturday, taking both games of a doubleheader, with a dominant 6-0 win in game one and a walk-off 4-3 victory in the finale. The Sunbirds (12-8) scored three runs in the final inning to cap off the series with a walk-off hit by
Hunter Villanueva and are now winners of six straight.
Game 1 - Fresno Pacific 6, Sonoma State 0
Baron Bower went 4-for-5 with a homerun and two RBI while
Wilson Ashford and
James Lagorio combined on a four-hit shutout as the Sunbirds took game one.
Hunter Villanueva went 1-for-2 with two walks and an RBI double, while fellow freshman
McKay France went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Ashford went four innings while striking out four before giving way to Lagorio, who picked up his first win of the season with a very effective outing, giving up just one hit in five innings of work.
"Lagorio was phenomenal," said head coach
Oscar Hirschkorn. "That was the best he has shown this year but it is what we know he's capable of. Because of his performance we were able to win the game feeling pretty good about things, but if he goes out there and does anything less than he did, that game gets pretty tight in a hurry."
The Sunbirds did a great job of consistently putting the play, as no FPU player struck out until the eighth inning. Blake Sack took the loss for SSU as the Sunbirds scored off four different Seawolves' pitchers.
Game 2 - Fresno Pacific 4, Sonoma State 3 (7 innings)
In game two, FPU trailed 3-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh before rallying to score three runs for the walk-off win. With the Sunbirds down to their final out,
Michael Hostetler delivered a two-out, two-RBI single that dropped into center field, tying the game 3-3.
He then stole second and scored on a walk-off single to right by freshman
Hunter Villanueva, who delivered heroics for the second straight night. The Sunbird freshman came through with the game-tying sacrifice fly and scored the winning run in FPU's walk-off win last night.
John Koretoff got the rally started in the final frame with a single to right. Pinch-hitter
Kevin Magill delivered a single in the rally as well. Once Hostetler stole second,
Joshua Banuelos was intentionally walked to put Villanueva at the plate.
"It was a series of great at-bats there at the end," said Hirschkorn. "It started with Koretoff being ready to swing and so many little things came into play.
Tanner Irwin did a great job of moving up to second base. Hostetler worked a great at-bat and came up huge. Hunter, I don't know if that kid feels pressure. It definitely looked like he was in his comfort zone and he showed that again."
Eian Raeber (2-2) earned the win with four scoreless innings of one-hit ball in relief of starter
Drew Merlo. Hostetler finished 2-for-4 with two RBI in the win.
Kaohu Gaspar went 2-for-3.
"Raeber came in with runners on and no outs and nobody scored," said Hirschkorn. "There's a lot of things that happened in that game and it's easy to forget that Eian was the one that gave us that chance to be right there in the last inning."
Sonoma State, picked to finish 3rd in the CCAA in the preseason poll, dropped to 6-7 on the season.
"They're a really tough team," said Hirschkorn. "They always are, year in and year out and so for us to grab three wins is a big momentum builder."
PacWest play resumes for the Sunbirds next weekend as they travel to Azusa Pacific for a four-game series beginning on Thursday night.
