Box Score 2 Fresno Pacific dropped both games of Saturday's doubleheader, falling 12-2 and 3-0 (7 innings) as #21 Cal Baptist took three out of four in the series. The Sunbirds (16-15, 7-9 PacWest) committed five errors in the first game leading to eight unearned runs. FPU then out-hit CBU seven to three in game two but was unable to get a run across in the loss.
"We were able to get a few things going offensively in each of the last three games but we just couldn't come up with the big hit," said head coach
Oscar Hirschkorn. "We had several opportunities to get in each game but unfortunately in every one of the big innings we were one hit short. The double play really hurt us all weekend as well."
The Sunbirds fell behind 4-0 in the second inning after a costly dropped fly ball that let three runs across on what would have been the final out of the inning. The Lancers (23-9, 8-8 PacWest) scored three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings as well to pull away.
"Pitching-wise we just gave away too may free passes," said Hirschkorn. "We were pitching behind in the count and we didn't command. You're not going to win too many giving up that many free passes."
Kaohu Gaspar went 2-for-4 and
McKay France went 2-for-3 with an RBI in game one.
Drew Merlo took the loss, lasting 4 1/3 innings and surrendering eight hits and four earned runs while striking out four. The Sunbird bullpen gave up an additional four runs, but
Austin Tatum and
Michael Rodrigues provided scoreless innings of relief.
Tyson Miller picked up the win for CBU, going eight innings and striking out seven while giving up just one run.
In game two the inabilty to field bunts cost the Sunbirds as two throwing errors on sacrifice bunt attempts allowed CBU to take a 2-0 lead in the third inning. FPU left six runners on base during the seven-inning game.
Josh Medeles took the loss, going 5 2/3 innings and giving up three runs (one earned) while walking four and striking out two.
James Lagorio and
Aaron Kirkpatrick provided scoreless frames in relief.
Joshua Banuelos and
John Koretoff each went 2-for-3 for FPU in the loss. Adam Hofacket earned the win for the Lancers, while Caleb Dirks picked up the save.
The Sunbirds are back in action next weekend, hosting NAIA program La Sierra of Riverside for a doubleheader on Friday at 12 pm. The Golden Eagles are 2-21 on the season.
