Missed opportunities cost FPU as CBU evens up series

Box Score

Missed opportunities plagued the Sunbirds on Friday night as FPU was unable to capitalize on nine hits in a 10-2 loss to CBU, who evened up the four-game series.

The Sunbirds (16-13, 7-7 PacWest) fell behind 5-1 by the third inning and missed on multiple chances to get to CBU ace Trevor Oaks. Those chances included a first and third no out situation in the second inning and a bases loaded, one out opportunity in the fifth when CBU was able to get Joshua Banuelos to ground into an inning ending double play.

J.D. Salles (2-5) took the loss for FPU, giving up six runs, four earned, in three innings of work. Kaohu Gaspar went 2-for-4 and Michael Tittle was 2-for-3 in the loss.

Oaks (6-0) struck out 10 over eight innings to earn the win for the Lancers (21-9, 6-8 PacWest). Andy Crowley, Antonio Chavarria and Mark Sanchez each tallied three hits for CBU.

FPU drew its largest crowd of the season, 572, as fans came out in force for Alumni Orange Out Night. The two teams conclude the series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 10 am, a start-time that was moved up two hours to avoid rain.
