FPU Baseball gets back on track with sweep of UHH

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Wilson Ashford and Drew Merlo provided the pitching and Joshua Banuelos and Hunter Villanueva provided the punch as Fresno Pacific swept a doubleheader from visiting Hawaii Hilo by scores of 5-3 and 3-1 on Saturday.

Banuelos showed no signs of slowing down his early-season offensive onslaught, going 4-for-6 with two doubles, two RBI and three runs scored on the day. Villanueva continued a sensational start to his freshman season with his best performance yet, reaching base all seven times he came up and finishing 6-for-6 with a walk and three RBI. Baron Bower added three hits on the night as the FPU lineup finished with 19 overall.

The FPU pitching staff didn't allow an earned run all evening as Ashford tossed a complete game in the first game, giving up just three hits and striking out six, before Merlo went a quality 6 2/3 innings in game two. Anthony Cantu came on for the final out to record the save.

FPU improved to 8-8 (3-4 PacWest) with the wins, while the Vulcans fell to 2-5 (1-2 PacWest).

The two teams meet up again tomorrow to complete the series, with a single game starting at 2 pm.
