Tittle goes deep as Sunbirds secure series win

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Game 1 - Fresno Pacific 6, San Francisco State 0
Game 2 - San Francisco State 3, Fresno Pacific 2 (7 innings)

Fresno Pacific split a doubleheader with visiting San Francisco State on Saturday, completing a three-game series in which the Sunbirds took two of three.

Wilson Ashford was flawless in the first game, throwing eight scoreless innings, giving up just two hits and striking out seven while walking none to earn the win.

Michael Tittle, who totaled five hits on the day, blasted the team's first homerun of the season while going 3-for-4 with three runs scored in the win. Joshua Banuelos continued his hot streak, going 2-for-4 with four RBI, while Kaohu Gaspar and John Koretoff also had two hits each.

"Wilson did a great job of attacking the strike zone and picking up right where J.D. left off to give another great performance," said head coach Oscar Hirschkorn. "I felt like all three games we hit the ball hard. We didn't always get rewarded, but that's the game. I thought we could have done a little better with our at-bats in the final game and that ended up costing us, but overall we've had a great approach."

In the second game FPU's Drew Merlo made his season debut on the mound, holding SFSU scoreless for the first five innings before running into trouble in the sixth and surrendering three runs. The final run would be the difference in the game, as FPU was unable to mount a rally in either of the final two frames.

"I thought Drew gave us a really good pitching performance," said Hirschkorn. "He kept the ball down, mixed his pitches, threw well to both sides of the plate, we're excited about what he's going to bring this year. The series win is good I just felt like we gave away the last game. With the outing Drew gave us and the scoring opportunities we didn't capitalize on, it just leaves you disappointed."

FPU begins PacWest conference play next Saturday, hosting Hawaii Pacific for a doubleheader.
