Box Score
OAKLAND, Calif. - Fresno Pacific won its fourth consecutive game, avenging a home loss to Holy Names from January 8 by cruising past the Hawks 84-66 on their home court. The Sunbirds (9-12, 4-9 PacWest) shot 52 percent from the field while holding the Hawks to 39 percent and dominating HNU on the glass with a 46-34 rebounding advantage and a 52-24 points in the paint advantage.
"It was nice to see us really defend, rebound and play with a lot of toughness," said head coach Chris Wright. "We did a really nice job of contesting shots and rebounding strong. How we played tonight is how I've envisioned us playing and what we've been working toward all year long."
HNU had defeated FPU 85-79 in Fresno earlier this season while the Sunbirds were without
Jackson Carbajal and
Phil Jackson, but a healthier and more determined Sunbird team would not be denied this time around. FPU trailed 18-11 in the first half before going on a 21-3 run to distance themselves at halftime. The Sunbirds continued that momentum in the second half, as the Hawks would get no closer than nine points in the final 15 minutes.
Carbajal led the Sunbirds with 20 points, going 8-for-11 from the field and a perfect 3-for-3 from long range.
Malcolm Griffin and
Trevon Clayton each posted double-doubles, Griffin with 19 points and 12 rebounds and Clayton with 16 points and a season-high 15 rebounds. Jackson added 15 points in the victory.
"All of our guys played really well tonight, whether it showed up in the box score or not," said Wright. "Carbajal did a great job, played hard, really defended and knocked down shots. He's been outstanding. Trev was an absolute beast on the boards and had 10 rebounds in the second half alone. When he's all over the glass like that it makes a big difference for our team."
Joshua Crum had 14 points to lead the Hawks (5-15, 4-8 PacWest).
The Sunbirds return home this Wednesday when they'll look to complete the season sweep of Notre Dame de Namur, a team they defeated 76-71 on Thursday.
"It'll be tough," said Wright. "They're a very well-coached team. They play hard and make good adjustments. We'll have to be dialed in and play like we did tonight."
