POMONA, Calif. - Fresno Pacific opened the Gary Troyer Tournament Friday with a win against Division I Fordham, 12-11, before settling for a day split after a 11-9 loss to host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the nightcap.
"Overall, I'm happy with our performance today," said head coach
Bryan Suhovy. "We continue to show growth in the right direction despite the split."
The Sunbirds fell into a quick 2-0 hole in the opener, but responded with consecutive goals from
Greg Bracamonte and
Connor Cookingham to knot the score at two after the first period. FPU continued its strong play into the second and third quarters to grab a 7-5 lead as the final period approached.
FPU put away the game with five scores in the fourth quarter, which included two from
Daniel Seymour, to secure the win 12-11. The junior nailed the would-be game winner with 30 seconds remaining for the Sunbirds.
Seymour led the charge offensively with a hat-trick, while Cookingham,
Ian Roos and
David Maes tallied two scores apiece. Bracramonte,
Kyle Madel and
Kyle Mauriello rounded out the scoring with a tally apiece.
In the afternoon session, FPU mounted a comeback in the final period before falling to CMS 11-9.
The Sunbirds trailed 8-3 at the intermission, but used a strong third quarter to jump back into the game. Seymour rifled two shots into the back of the net, while Roos added a score to pull FPU within three at 9-6 as the third period ended.
FPU netted three more scores in the final quarter, but couldn't come all the way back to fall 11-9.
Seymour recorded his second hat-trick of the day in the loss, while Maes also tallied three scores. Bracamonte,
John Samson and Roos finished out the scoring with a goal apiece.
"It was a tough loss to CMS after being in the game the entire time," said Suhovy. "We just couldn't get those last few goals we needed. We lost Kyle (Madel) in the second quarter due to an injury which hurt our subbing rotation. Erik (Schlick) stepped in and played well, while our primary defender in Steven (Kaufmann) really stepped up as well. We need to rest up and prepare for Iona tomorrow morning as we look to continue playing well."
FPU continues action tomorrow at the Gary Troyer Tournament against Iona (10 a.m.) and Pomona-Pitzer (2 p.m.).
