Sunbirds sweep APU for 10th straight win

Fresno Pacific won its 10th straight match Wednesday, defeating conference rival Azusa Pacific 3-0 to sweep the season series with the Cougars and improve to 11-3 in PacWest play, 17-6 overall.

Rupia Inck had 14 kills, Morghan Williams added 12 on .321 hitting and Kathleen Anderson finished with 10 in the win. Anderson hit a match-high .643 with just one error and led a vicious Sunbird block with seven blocks on the night. The Sunbirds hit .300 as a team with the offense being facilitated by Bissie DenHartog (24 assists) and Sarah McCann (14 assists, five blocks). Hannah Butler led the team with 11 digs.

"I was really concerned that after coming off such a big weekend in Hawaii that we would have a little bit of a letdown here," said head coach Kelly Winter. "We came back with a lot of injuries, some players sick and a lot of soreness, along with a lot of work to catch up on academically. It's tough when you make a trip like that but this team is really tough. They dig deep and do a great job of finding whatever strength they have left and getting after it. Hannah was sick tonight but she did an outstanding job of keeping the ball in play."

The Cougars (11-12, 7-7 PacWest) dropped their fifth straight match and were led by Mattie Shelford's 11 kills.

FPU improved to 64-13 all-time against APU, the best record of any program against APU in any sport.

The Sunbirds host Point Loma on Saturday at 3 pm in an important PacWest match with playoff implications as the Sunbirds need to maintain their hold on third place in the conference.
