Slow start dooms Sunbirds as streak comes to an end

Fresno Pacific saw its 10-match winning streak come to an end on Saturday as visiting Point Loma knocked off the Sunbirds in four sets. The Sunbirds (17-7, 11-4 PacWest) were unable to overcome a sluggish start as the Sea Lions (15-9, 12-4 PacWest) took the first two sets. FPU dominated the third set then jumped out to a 13-7 lead in set four before an 11-0 Sea Lion run proved to be the difference.

"They served us tough and we had a hard time getting the ball to our middle," said head coach Kelly Winter. "Our middles were doing a great job of executing but we didn't pass as well as we needed to in order to keep our middles involved as much as we'd like. Going forward, we have to use this as a tool to get better. We can't let the frustrations of tonight take us back a step. We've got to learn from it, grow together and get better because we still have a lot of volleyball left."

Morghan Williams led FPU with 16 kills while Kathleen Anderson added 10 and hit .405. Gabriela Macedo posted a double-double with 14 kills and 14 digs. Hannah Butler led the Sunbirds with 22 digs while Bissie DenHartog and Sarah McCann combined for 46 assists. Rupia Inck had 14 digs, but would be held to a negative attack percentage in the loss.

Kelli LeClair had 15 kills to lead the Sea Lions, who moved past the Sunbirds into third place in the conference.

The Sunbirds return to action next Thursday as they host Dominican at 7 pm. PacWest commissioner Bob Hogue will be on hand to present the university with the conference's community engagement award, won by the Sunbirds in 2013-14 for doing an extraordinary job serving their community.
