HONOLULU - Despite being thousands of miles from home and in the middle of a grueling road trip after a five-set match last night, the Fresno Pacific volleyball team dug deep and delivered a crucial PacWest victory on Friday night. With many of its players battling sickness and adjusting to the travel, the team showed extraordinary resiliency by knocking off a Chaminade team that has given trouble to nearly every PacWest opponent on its home court.
With the Sunbirds needing a boost, the team's go-to player and senior captain delivered in a big way as Kathleen Anderson led the team with 15 kills, hit a sizzling .464 and finished with a team-high five blocks. The team recorded just one error in a dominant final set, hitting .385 in set four to seal the win.
"Our middles were really good tonight," said head coach
Kelly Winter. "We passed well, served well and executed the gameplan. Defensively we did a great job marking their best hitter. I'm really proud of the way we competed. Not many teams have left Hawaii with a winning record but this group has just done a tremendous job of staying focused throughout the trip."
Bissie DenHartog recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 36 assists and 12 digs, while Hannah Butler posted a team-high 15 digs. Rebecca Waller was once again a major factor on the offensive end, hitting .368 with nine kills. Gabriela Macedo put together a well-balanced performance with seven kills, six digs, four blocks, three aces and just one attack error. Rupia Inck added 11 kills in the win.
The
Sunbirds (15-6, 9-3 PacWest) secured their eighth consecutive victory with the win, while the Silverswords dropped to 11-12, 4-9 in PacWest play.
FPU concludes the road trip tomorrow at first-place BYU Hawaii, the #4 team in the nation. BYUH defeated FPU 3-2 in Fresno earlier this season.Â
