HILO, Hawaii - FPU outlasted Hawaii Hilo in five sets for the second time this season as the Sunbirds kicked off their Hawaii road trip with a 3-2 victory. The Sunbirds (14-6, 8-3 PacWest) have now won seven in a row.
"We did a really nice job offensively," said head coach
Kelly Winter. "We just had way too many errors and missed serves that we have to clean up. I'm proud of this team though for the way they battled. It's been a long trip already and most of our team is sick right now but they didn't let that slow them down."
Morghan Williams had 19 kills and hit .366, one of three Sunbirds to hit over .360 on the night.
Rupia Inck had 20 kills and 15 digs, while
Hannah Butler finished with a match-high 27 digs.
Kathleen Anderson and
Gabriela Macedo had 13 kills apiece, with Anderson finishing at .387 hitting and Macedo adding 17 digs.
Rebecca Waller posted a team-high .400 attack percentage with nine kills.
Sarah McCann and
Bissie DenHartog combined for 66 assists. Anderson led the team with four service aces.
Toni Murphy added two, to go with 12 digs on the night.
Callie Aberle had 23 kills and 19 digs for the Vulcans (5-11, 4-9 PacWest).
The Sunbirds hit .268 as a team, including .425 in set three. The Vulcans hit .235 on the night.
Due to an unbalanced PacWest schedule, the Sunbirds now fly to Oahu to take on a well-rested Chaminade team that didn't play tonight. The Silverswords upset Point Loma last week and gave a lot of trouble to both Cal Baptist and Azusa Pacific.
"We have to execute better," said Winter. "We know there's a good chance it could come down to just a few points and there's a small margin for error."
