FRESNO, Calif. – Daniel Seymour's game-winning goal in sudden death propelled Fresno Pacific to an upset win over #19 California Baptist 14-13 Thursday night in front of more than 500 fans at Sunnyside Aquatics Center.
FPU improves to 10-6 overall and 1-2 in the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) with the win. The Sunbirds earned their first-ever win against CBU in 21 previous matchups and also picked up its first WWPA victory in program history. The Lancers fell to 13-11 overall and 1-3 in conference.
"This is a huge win for our program," said head coach
Bryan Suhovy. "The guys here before and these guys here now have been working the last seven years to accomplish this. We've been developing players and as a new team, you have to start from somewhere. It paid off tonight with guys like
Ian Roos and Daniel. Ian absolutely blew up tonight in the center position and controlled the game, and Daniel continues to make a statement conference wide with his goal-scoring abilities."
Seymour tallied his second game-winning score in back-to-back games and finished the night with four goals. Roos proved to be the difference in the match, however, and led the Sunbird offense with five scores in addition to his defense at the center position.
Dillon Robinson was the other key to victory behind Roos and the Sunbird defense in the cage, and finished with a career-high 25 saves.
"The defensive effort was excellent tonight," said Suhovy. "We went with Dillon in goal, who thrives on atmospheres like this tonight. He came up with some big stops, and the guys on top of him in the back had a lot of field blocks and steals to help. We came in knowing who to target and how to take away their shooters and it paid off."
FPU held an 8-7 lead at the intermission and a 10-9 advantage after three quarters before the Lancers forced overtime. Following a man-up goal from
Connor Cookingham that put the Sunbirds up 12-10 with 2:13 remaining, the Lancers closed the final period with two straight goals to knot the game at 12 at the end of regulation. The latter score came with only 23 seconds remaining.
After a scoreless opening overtime period, the Lancers tallied the first goal in the second extra period with 2:31 remaining. Roos refused to let the Sunbirds sink in front of their home crowd however, and responded on the following possession with an overpowering goal at two-meters to force the sudden death period.
Seymour's heroics ensued in the golden goal final period. The juniors game-winner was set up by a block from Robinson in goal and an outlet pass to Seymour, who drew an ejection before rifling home a shot into the cage to send fans into a frenzy.
"We used our patience and set up our six-on-five offense," said Suhovy about the final possession. "We moved the ball around and when it got back around the goalie started to drift. We were about to move the ball back up to the top, but Daniel saw the hole and pulled the trigger. It was the right thing to do."
David Maes tallied two goals for FPU in the win, while
John Samson and
Kyle Mauriello scored a goal apiece to round out the scoring.
FPU continues play this weekend at the Santa Clara Rodeo Tournament with games against #13 Air Force, #15 Santa Clara, #14 Brown and Bucknell.
