Sunbirds capture fifth straight with 3-1 win at ARTU

SAN FRANCISCO - Rupia Inck continued her recent surge with 21 kills on .340 hitting as FPU defeated Academy of Art in four sets on Wednesday night. Inck hit above .300 for the third consecutive match and the Sunbirds (12-6, 6-3 PacWest) got contributions from every spot on the court to pick up a key PacWest road victory over the Urban Knights (8-10, 3-7 PacWest).

"Rupia has really committed herself to working on the mental side of the game and is playing with a lot of confidence," said head coach Kelly Winter. "Academy of Art is always a tough team for us to play against. They have some really good athletes and do a good job at creating mismatches. Tonight we did a good job of taking away their favorite shots by playing very disciplined on defense and on the block. Our team defense was the difference tonight."

Hannah Butler continued her spectacular play on defense, finishing with a match-high 33 digs to lead a Sunbird defense that amassed 93 digs as a team and held the Urban Knights to a .125 attack percentage. Toni Murphy added 15 and Gabriela Macedo had 12.

"I was really pleased with our defensive effort tonight," said Winter. "We were digging seemingly every ball and that allowed us to stay in system. Bissie did a nice job of finding Rupia and we were able to get our middles involved. Hannah was on top of her game as usual, but Toni, Sarah and many others came up with some big digs as well."

Kathleen Anderson finished with 11 kills and Morghan Williams added 10, while Bissie DenHartog dished out 25 assists. Sarah McCann added 16 assists and eight digs. Inck and DenHartog each finished one dig short of a double-double, totaling nine digs apiece.

FPU also put together what Winter called its best serving performance of the year, finishing with nine service aces led by Butler and Inck with three each. The Sunbirds hit .417 in a dominant set two, and after a lethargic third set that saw the team hit in the negative the Sunbirds would use a 9-0 run to put it away in set four, extending the lead from 13-9 to 22-9.

The Sunbirds are back in action again tomorrow night in the Bay Area, taking on Notre Dame de Namur at 7 pm. The Argos are looking for their first win, coming in at 0-17 on the season.
