Sunbirds rally late; score overtime win over Holy Names

Box Score

Despite being down nine with just 1:01 remaining in regulation the Sunbirds battled back and took down Holy Names in overtime 88-82 for their third win in four games.

"It was huge," said head coach Lindsey Wilson. "You saw people on the bench getting excited and we were playing with a passion and the energy we want. It was the most exciting thing for me is that we had the lead and we weren't playing well but we kept fighting all the way until the end."

Patrice Saindon paced the Sunbirds (3-8, 3-2 PacWest) with a career-high 30 points on 13-21 shooting including a perfect 2-2 from beyond the arc. The senior guard also came up with five rebounds and four assists in the comeback win. Jenay Herring, Charde Stevens and Brooke Vidmar also finished in double figures as FPU finished with its second highest point total of the season. Stevens notched her third double-double of the year with 16 points and 14 rebounds.

After a back and forth game throughout the first half the Sunbirds were finally able to wrestle control from the Hawks (7-5, 3-3 PacWest) with a 7-2 run to close the half sparked by a three-point dagger from freshman Brooke Vidmar. Out of the break HNU quickly pushed back putting together a 16-5 run of its own and taking control of the game with an eight-point lead.

With 50-seconds remaining Vidmar came up big once again hitting her second three of the game to close the deficit to six. Saindon and Herring both hit layups to bring the Sunbirds within one possession, and with three seconds left Stevens hit a pair of free throws to send the game into overtime.

In the extra period Saindon scored nine of the Sunbirds 15 points including a three with 1:01 left to put FPU up for good.
Herring finished with 17 points followed by Stevens with 16 and Vidmar with her first career double-digit game with 11 points.

Renique Fitzpatrick put on a clinic down low scoring a career-high 34 points on 10-17 shooting and pulling down 10 rebounds, nine on the defensive end. Sonia Aguilar, Brittany Modesto-Potestio and Kali Taeleifi 10.

Fresno Pacific looks to sweep their season series with California Baptist this Saturday at 2:30 when they host the Lancers in the FPU Events Center.
