The Sunbirds rode another explosive offensive night from junior
Jenay Herring as they ran off their fourth-straight win in a 69-64 victory over Notre Dame de Namur.
Herring ran off 18 points, on 7-of-10 shooting, nine assists and five steals finishing just shy of her first double-double of the season. Her 70-percent field goal percentage was the highest shooting percentage in a single game with at least 10 shots since December 7, 2011 against Cal Maritime.
"She's been putting in extra work in the gym every day after practice," said Wilson. "Her skill set is really dangerous and we need her to make an impact in every game we play."
Herring was just one Sunbird to hit double-digits in the scoring column as FPU got 12 points from
Charde Stevens and freshman
Bree Alvarez, and 11 points from
Breana Buczek. Stevens and Buczek also pulled down eight rebounds for a team that held a 37-28 advantage on the glass, the fourth time in five games coach Wilson's squad has out rebounded their opponents.
The Sunbirds used an 8-of-9 performance from the free throw line in the first half to build a 10-point lead at the break. FPU hit its first three shots out of the halftime and pushed their lead quickly to 15.
A layup by Stevens gave the Sunbirds a 19-point lead with 14 minutes remaining in the second half before Notre Dame de Namur went on a 20-9 run over the next minutes to cut the lead to single digits.
"I think we played really hard for most of the game and did a good job in transition," said Wilson. "We just relaxed way too much in the second half, and that allowed them to get back into the game. Learning to put our opponents away is something that will come with time and more experience."
Fresno Pacific will return to Northern California on Saturday when they head to Oakland to take on Holy Names at 2:00 pm. The Sunbirds defeated the Hawks in overtime 88-82 at home on January 8.
"Holy Names is a tough team as we found out earlier this month. We are going to have to do all the little things against them just like we do against every team we play in order to win," said Wilson.Â
