Stevens' 25 leads FPU in upset win over Hawaii Pacific

Box Score

The Sunbirds pulled out their second straight win upsetting third-placed Hawaii Pacific, who had won four straight, 67-63.

Charde Stevens lit it up on the scoreboard pouring in a game-high 25 points on 10-14 shooting and got it done on the glass as well with a game-high eight rebounds. Patrice Saindon added 15 points and five assists for the Sunbirds (5-11, 5-5 PacWest). As a team the Sunbirds equaled a season-high 50-percent shooting from the floor making it just the second time this season FPU has hit at least half of its shots.

"That was the hardest we've played all season for 40 minutes, that was the least amount of mental mistakes we've made, and that is what we have to do every single game to get wins," said head coach Lindsey Wilson. "I am so proud of everyone on the team tonight, not just the girls who stepped on the floor, but everyone on our team."

Hawaii Pacific (11-5, 7-3 PacWest) was held in check by a tenacious effort on the defensive end from Fresno Pacific. Senior guard Skye Savini, who had averaged 22 points over the teams' last five games, was held in check offensively scoring 15 points on 6-of-17 from the floor. The Sea Warriors shot a respectable 42.1-percent from the field as a team, but it wasn't enough to overcome the efficient attack of the Sunbirds.

The biggest win for FPU on the stat sheet came in the rebounding department where the Sunbirds were even throughout the game despite facing the third best rebounding team in the PacWest. Both teams finished with 10 offensive and 23 defensive rebounds.

The first half was a back and forth affair until the 1:18 mark when a three from freshman Bree Alvarez sparked an 8-0 run to end the half for the Sunbirds. The Sunbirds quickly pushed the lead to nine out of the halftime before Hawaii Pacific went on a 10-0 run over the next four minutes to take a one-point lead.

The game swung back and forth with runs from both teams that ultimately led to a seven-point lead for Fresno Pacific with 19 seconds left that put the game out of reach for the Sea Warriors.
