Carbajal has big night in return, but Sunbirds fall 93-86 to BYUH

Box Score

Fresno Pacific battled back from a 21-point deficit to cut BYU Hawaii's lead to five in the final minute, but the Sunbirds were handed another tough PacWest loss 93-86 to fall to 0-8 in the conference.

Jackson Carbajal scored 25 points in his first game back from injury and Malcolm Griffin added 21, but the Seasiders shot 50% from the field and were deadly from long-range to improve to 7-7, 5-3 in PacWest play. Pablo Coro had 21 points, including six three-pointers to lead BYUH.

Josh Mason added 16 points for FPU and Jonathan Jefferson finished with 14 points and nine rebounds. Carbajal was 10-for-16 from the field, 4-for-6 from beyond the three-point line and added nine rebounds. Trevon Clayton pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds.

The Sunbirds shot 58% in the second half as they attempted to mount a comeback, drawing steadily closer until cutting the Seasider lead to five at 89-84 with 37 seconds left after a Jefferson putback. BYUH got a foul call on the other end though on a play that could have gone either way, effectively ending FPU's chances.

"The guys did a great job of battling back in the second half but you simply can't spot a team as many points as we did in the first half, especially one as well-coached as BYU Hawaii," said head coach Chris Wright. "Jackson played really well and we are happy to have him back. If we can continue the momentum we had in the second half and turn that into a complete game, we're going to have a real good shot in Monday's game against a talented Chaminade team."

FPU out-rebounded the Seasiders 41-32 in the loss. BYUH got a huge boost from its bench, outscoring the Sunbirds 54-27.

FPU is back at home on Monday night, facing Chaminade at 7:30 pm.
