Box Score
St. George, Utah -- Senior
Sienna Gonzales tied a career-high with 15 points and
Breana Buczek hit double digits for the third time this season in a 75-62 loss to Dixie State in Utah.
The Sunbirds (3-10, 3-4 PacWest) were unable to slow down Haley Holmstead and the Red Storm (7-7, 5-3 PacWest) offense, which shot nearly 47-percent from the field.
Patrice Saindon and
Jenay Herring added nine points each for the Sunbirds, and Saindon handed out six assists. Fresno Pacific was without sophomore standout
Charde Stevens and was outrebounded 45-27 on the glass without their leading rebounder.
"I am happy with the effort our team put forth tonight," said head coach
Lindsey Wilson. "We played hard and gave 100-percent for 40 minutes. We have to do a better job of limiting our fouls and not allowing the other team to get free points. We also have to rebound better and maintain our defensive discipline in order to be successful."
The Sunbirds started hot jumping out to a 10-2 lead in the first four minutes while running an incredibly fast paced offense and rotating multiple players in per substitution.
Ashley Bonenfant hit a layup with 6:24 left in the first half to give FPU its biggest lead of the half at 26-17. By the time the half rolled around the Sunbirds were still holding on to a six-point lead.
Out of the break FPU, behind buckets from Gonzales and Buczek, pushed their lead to seven twice before the Red Storm went on an 11-2 run and took the lead for good.
The Sunbirds return to the confines of the FPU Events Center this Saturday when they host the first of four Hawaii teams beginning with BYU-Hawaii at 2:30 p.m.
