Fresno Pacific continued its offensive woes on Tuesday, falling 2-0 at home to Dixie State in the PacWest opener for both teams. The two teams played a scoreless first half, but the Red Storm unleashing 20 shots after halftime, including two goals to pull away for the victory.
"As a team we were defending well and really minimizing Dixie's chances in the first half," said head coach Erik Farfan. "We were creating some chances offensively as well. You can create chances all day long but if you don't convert chances then you keep teams in the game, and as you can see by the second half, that inability to separate ourselves from our opponent cost us."
The Sunbirds (1-3, 0-1 PacWest) were shutout for the third consecutive game but the Sunbirds had their chances with 15 shots and seven shots on goal. DSU (1-2-1, 1-0 PacWest) found the net in the 59th minute when Kimberly Thurman connected on a rocket shot from just outside the box. Jennifer Mason added a late goal for the Red Storm on a great pass from Ashley Wade.
Sarah King had another fantastic effort in goal, making 12 saves on the night and bringing her season total to 34 saves in just four matches.
"We need to go out every half and compete at the highest level that we can," said Farfan. "Our inability to be consistent has really cost us. Dixie came out with a lot of determination and energy in the second half and we didn't match that. We need to change that in order for us to be successful in the PacWest, especially next week against Cal Baptist."
FPU takes on CBU next Wednesday at 5 pm at Ramirez Field. The Lancers are the two-time defending PacWest champs and are the preseason favorite to repeat this season.
"We need a complete performance, both in terms of defensive effectiveness and offensive production," said Farfan. "We need both of those pieces of the puzzle to compete at this level. It'll certainly take a 90 minute effort instead of a 45 minute effort. Last year we gained a lot of confidence with a good second half against a very strong CBU team. We're hoping to carry that into next week's game."
