The Sunbirds snapped an 18-game losing streak with a 7-6 win over Cal State San Bernardino (6-25) in the second round of the CCAA Invite.
Kelsie Harvey and Dani Mortimer led the way for the Sunbirds (2-20). Mortimer tallied a hat trick scoring two first quarter goals and the game-winner in the fourth quarter. Harvey continued to prove that she is one of the best goalkeepers in the conference, stopping 15 shots, including eight in the decisive final frame.
"That was big," said head coach Bryan Suhovy. "Such a young team, such a small team they are learning how to fight and captitalize on that desire. They are starting to pick up on the little things we have been working on all season."
The Sunbirds go off to a hot start scoring the first two goals of the game. Freshman Candice Cobarrubias added the third goal of the quarter and the Sunbirds held their first lead at the end of the first quarter since a one-goal lead against the same San Bernardino team on February 9. FPU led 5-2 at half time.
In the third quarter the Coyotes battled back scoring three unanswered goals to even the game at five.
But the senior Mortimer was not about to let the opportunity slip away as she combined with freshman Emily Marr to score two quick goals in the fourth and take a 7-5 lead.
Stout defense and spectacular goalkeeping allowed FPU to hang on in the fourth.
The Sunbirds dropped their opener to the second-seeded Seawolves of Sonoma State 11-7 in game one of the tournament. Marr scored a hat trick and Harvey tallied 12 saves in the loss.
"To be ranked seventh and to now be fighting for fifth place in the tournament is big for us," said Suhovy. "The girls I know are really pumped up and I think we are setting up for a lot of success tomorrow."
Fresno Pacific will move on to day two of the tournament to face Azusa Pacific at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday.
