Sunbirds can't stop Pioneers win streak

Box Score

Hayward, Calif. - Fresno Pacific was unable to mount a second-half comeback over Cal State East Bay as the Sunbirds fell to 1-14 on the season despite double-digit saves from Kelsie Harvey.

All-American Dani Mortimer led FPU with three goals in the match, and Emily Marr chipped in two as the pair accounted for all but one of the goals scored in the loss.

“We were happy with how our girls played today. They showed up prepared to play and executed what we worked on," said head coach Bryan Suhovy. "It is the best we have played in a while, and it showed with us taking the lead in the first quarter and keeping it close through most of the game."

The Sunbirds were down early after one quarter 3-2, but continued their string of dominant first half defense and went in down by just two at the break. The Pioneers used a 3-1 third quarter to push the game out of reach for FPU.

Fresno Pacific has struggled offensively this season and has yet to score in double-digits during a match. The Sunbirds have 84 goals through the first 15 games of the season and are averaging 5.6 goals per game this season.

CSUEB closed the door with four goals in the fourth quarter to win its sixth straight and improve to 9-7 on the season as they look for another top finish in the Western Water Polo Association.

"In the fourth we had some costly mistakes due to inexperience and fell short in the end. We are still not where we need to be, and have a ways to go before we are, however we did show a lot of growth and fight in today's game,” said Suhovy

Fresno Pacific will be back on the road next weekend when they travel to Sonoma State for a 4:00 pm match against the Seawolves.
