Women's Results vs. Point Loma
The Sunbirds closed out the 2013 home schedule with a pair of wins over Point Loma Nazarene. The wins also earned both the men and women a season sweep of the Sea Lions.
The men were dominant in an 8-1 win over Point Loma dropping just the No. 5 singles match on senior day.
All three seniors, John Karlman, Kirill Sinitsyn and Amarit Sanchez, won both their singles and doubles matches.
No. 15 Sinitsyn swept Brooks Baldinger at No. 1 singles; his second straight win over a regionally ranked opponent. Sanchez also won in straight set fashion over Michael Zabian 7-6, 6-4. Karlman got the nod at No. 6 singles as the Sunbirds were forced to move several players up with the absence of the team's regular No. 3 Kyle Rowe. Karlman delivered on his senior day with a three-set victory over Daniel Milliken 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
In doubles the Sunbirds won convincingly despite being forced to break up one of the top doubles pairs in the region in Sinitsyn and Rowe. Sanchez and Michael Tymkiw took over at the No. 1 spot where they earned an 8-1 win over Jakob Kevelaerts and Zabian. Sinitsyn and Stefan Loop overtook Baldinger and Bram Kevelaerts 8-4, and Karlman and Marco Gabriel won 8-4 over Kaptan Kaster and Milliken at No. 3 doubles.
On the women's side the Sunbirds snuck by the Sea Lions with a 5-4 win. In the top half of the singles draw FPU was dominant allowing just a combined three games to go to their opponents. But, at No. 3- No. 6 the Sunbirds were unable to come up with a victory.
No. 14 Marie Boura and Erika Januskova both won their singles and doubles matches on senior day. Both Boura and Januskova won their singles matches by allowing just one game to slip through their fingers.
Freshman No. 24 Petra Jurova defeated Hope Penner at No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-0.
Seniors Anna Mikhaylova and Nicole Simoni both dropped their final home matches in straight sets. Mikhaylova held a 4-3 lead in set one before Kiersten Steinhauer mounted a comeback to take set one 7-6. Steinhauer finished off the 2-0 victory with a 6-4 set two win.
Both teams will travel to Sonoma next Friday. The men will face No. 28 UC San Diego before a Saturday showdown with Sonoma State, and the women will face Sonoma State on Friday. Matches will begin at 1:00 pm.
