FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno Pacific tennis teams wrapped up regular season play with a final showdown against the nationally ranked Azusa Pacific Cougars. Despite the tough challenge, the Sunbirds ended the day on a high note as they recognized their spectacular seniors.
The Lady 'Birds faced their greatest opponent yet, No. 23 Azusa Pacific. In a brilliant showing, Fresno Pacific secured the doubles point with wins on court one and two.
Fabiana Gonzalez and
Yume Ueoku defeated APU's Larsson and Suviste (6-3) while
Halle Faherty and
Jessica McLean won their match (7-5). However, the Cougars captured every point in singles, excluding the match between freshman Fabi and APU's Bautista (7-5, 6-0). The match conclude with Azusa Pacific winning 5-2.
"We capped off a strong regular season and celebrated our two seniors Mago and Malia for everything they bring to our program." Head coach Sam Gaedeert mentioned, "everyone is feeling prepared and hungry for postseason success now as we head to Arizona for the PacWest tournament."
Later that day, the Sunbird men fell to the Cougars 6-1. Although the men put up a valiant fight, No. 38 Azusa Pacific captured the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. The sole Sunbird win came from singles court No. 2, where senior
Emilio Seelbach stunned APU's Behrend with a brilliant 6-2, 6-1 score. Angel España (3-6, 6-2, 1-6) and
Jordi Gonzalez (6-7, 6-3, 2-6) went to three rounds of play, but ultimately fell to the Cougars.
"We finished the regular season with a strong showing against the current No. 1 PacWest team," said Gaeddert. "I think we have a lot of momentum and a lot of confidence heading into the conference tournament next week. I am especially proud of Emilio who won his match decisively at number two singles. Angel also had one of his best matches of the season. These two seniors are giving us a lot to fight for next week!"
Fresno Pacific tennis recognized the following seniors after the match:
Malia Mitchell, Margarita Munoz, Seelbach, and España. Their contributions throughout the season were unforgettable, leaving a lasting impression on the program.
