AZUSA, Calif. - Closing out their season, #4 seed Fresno Pacific women's tennis competed against #1 seed Azusa Pacific for a chance at the NCAA DII Tennis Championships. The Sunbirds put up a valiant fight, but ultimately fell 4-0 on Friday afternoon, ending their brilliant season ranked 32nd in the nation.
After falling to nationally-ranked Azusa in the PacWest Championships, the Lady 'Birds had hoped for a change in outcome at the NCAA West Regionals. However, the Cougars jumped ahead with a strong win in doubles on courts two and three (going 6-4 on both courts). FPU's
Fabiana Gonzalez and
Yume Ueoku took on APU's ranked pair, but the match was left unfinished at 6-6.
Azusa Pacific didn't look back as they swept through the singles matches on courts four, three, and six to clinch the point. Incredible performances by Ueoku and Gonzalez held off the Cougars' strongest competitors, but it wasn't enough to stop the reigning PacWest Champions.
The Sunbirds wrapped up their season 12-8 overall. As a unit, the Lady 'Birds garnered national attention, jumping all the way to No. 26 in the nation. They secured four All-Conference selections including PacWest Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year honors. Together, the team boasted a seven-win streak just before entering the PacWest Championships and celebrated several big upsets. Despite being predicted to finish sixth in conference, the Sunbirds closed their season fourth overall!
Under head Coach
Sam Gaeddert's leadership, FPU women's tennis team will continue to develop and conquer in the next coming season. There is much in store for the Blue and Orange!
