Men's Results vs. No. 11 Azusa Pacific
Women's Results vs. No. 29 Azusa Pacific
The Sunbirds made history on Monday, just not the history they were hoping for, when they lost to Azusa Pacific in both the men's and women's matches for the first time in program history.
Both matches came down to the final singles match as both teams lost by an identical 4-5 score to the Cougars.
The women fell to No. 29 APU (13-3) for the first time in the programs seven-plus season history as No. 17 Emily Harris defeated freshman Petra Jurova in three sets 6-7, 6-1, 6-2. Nationally ranked players, seniors No. 16 Marie Boura and No. 48 Erika Januskova, swept their singles matches to five the No. 28 Sunbirds (14-6) an early 4-1 lead after FPU won two of three doubles matches.
In singles, Boura and Jurova pulled off a big upset taking down No. 10 Emily Harris and Danae Ingwaldson 8-4 at No. 1 doubles. The pair improved their record to 16-4 overall and 2-0 against nationally ranked opponents.
Doubles has been the strength of FPU this season, where the team has racked up a 43-17 record and .717 winning percentage.
The Sunbirds were swept at the No. 4-6 spots in singles. That coupled with Jurova's loss at No. 1 singles vaulted to the Cougars first ever victory over Fresno Pacific. FPU was previously 16-0 against Azusa Pacific.
The men were looking to rebound from a 4-5 loss to No. 11 Azusa Pacific (17-0) earlier this season, their first loss of the season.
The Sunbirds (11-6) got off to a good start scoring two points in doubles including an upset win at No. 2 doubles where Amarit Sanchez and Michael Tymkiw earned an 8-5 win over No. 24 Frederik Wilkens and Gary Yam. Kirill Sinitsyn and Kyle Rowe dropped to 1-2 on the season against nationally ranked opponents in a 6-8 loss to No. 25 Jochem Hoefnagels and Jan Meyer.
In singles Sinitsyn avenged a loss to No. 6 Hoefnagels earlier this season with a 7-6, 6-3 straight set victory. Sinitsyn earned his second win of the season against a nationally ranked opponent.
Sanchez and Marco Gabriel both fell to nationally ranked opponents in straight sets at No. 2 and No. 3 singles.
The match was knotted at four with Stefan Loop yet to finish his singles match. The sophomore took set one against Yam 6-4 before falling in set two 4-6. In the decisive third set Loop fell 3-6 as the Cougars swept the season series with the Sunbirds.
Fresno Pacific will close out their home season on Thursday when they take on Point Loma at the Haak Tennis Center. The women will play at 11:00 am and the men will play at 1:00 pm.
