FPU mounts comeback, but falls to LaVerne 3-2 and Chapman 8-4

Thousand Oaks, Calif. - Fresno Pacific concluded play at the Posada Royale Invitational on Saturday, falling to LaVerne 3-2 and Chapman 8-4. The Sunbirds (1-13) mounted a comeback in the fourth quarter in the opening match coming up just short before the lack of depth came back to haunt them in the final game.

Emily Marr led FPU totaling two goals on the day while Kelsie Harvey played well in the cage despite the two losses.

LaVerne 3, FPU 2

The Sunbirds were shut out in the first three quarters falling behind 2-0 before Marr got the Sunbirds on the board with a goal and cut the deficit 2-1 with 5:10 remaining.

The match proved to be tight throughout until LaVerne was able to add an insurance goal with 1:21 to go from Alexis Zamora to go back ahead by two 3-1.

One last push from the Sunbirds made things interesting as Dani Mortimer rifled in a goal with 51 seconds remaining to pull FPU within one 3-2, but it proved to be not enough in the end.

Chapman 8, Fresno Pacific 4

A 4-1 hole after the first quarter of play proved too much to handle for Fresno Pacific, despite outscoring the Panthers 3-2 in the second half.

The Sunbirds surrendered four goals before Samantha Clark got FPU on the scoreboard at the end of the first quarter. FPU couldn't hang onto the momentum however, falling behind 6-1 at the half as Chapman poured in two more goals in the second quarter while FPU was shut out.

Fresno Pacific came out in the third quarter strong, scoring two goals behind one apiece from Candice Cobarrubias and Nia Apodaca. Chapman maintained the difference with a goal of their own with 1:34 remaining in the third, going ahead 7-3 entering the final period.

The Panthers managed one more goal at the beginning of the fourth period before the Sunbirds tacked on a final goal of their own from Marr, settling the match at 8-4.

The Sunbirds travel to Hayward next Saturday to take on Cal State East Bay at 1:00 pm, a team FPU has fallen to once already this season 13-4.
