Sunbirds drop heartbreaker to Lee in NCCAA Semis

Box Score Different season similar story for a Sunbird men's soccer team which saw it's season come to an end 2-1 in the final minutes of the NCCAA National Semifinal to Lee University. Gustavo Silva scored the final goal of his FPU career in the loss.

"It was a good match from the beginning," said head coach Jaime Ramirez. "It's just so disappointing for these guys who have worked so hard. We had the better of the play, but it holds true that not always the best team wins."

Silva scored on a penalty kick drawn by Adrian Arias in the 32nd minute of the first half to even the score at 1-1 after a Quade Marinell goal in the 10th minute.

Fresno Pacific dominated the run of play for the majority of the match creating numerous opportunities to put the ball in the back of the net. Perhaps the biggest came late in the first half when Bruno Pessoa headed a cross from Joey Belzil toward the goal. Flames keeper Tom Halsall stopped it and the rebound went right back to Pessoa who had a seemingly wide-open look. Halsall somehow managed to get back up enough to poke away the second header attempt and keep the match at 1-1.

Lee put away their final chance on a scrum in front of the net. After four shots followed by rebounds, the Flames' Gabe Franco was able to knock it into the net past keeper Fabian Rangel.

FPU continued to fight in the final nine minutes creating a few clear chances, but were unable to pull off a similar brand of magic that the Flames had captured just 48 hours before. The loss not only bounced the Sunbirds from the tournament short of their national title aspirations for the second straight year, but also ended a nine-game unbeaten streak that FPU carried into the match.

"It is so hard to understand in this game sometimes why the ball just doesn't go in the back of the net," said Ramirez. "You look at their second goal and it was fortuitous. We had a few more clearer opportunities I think and it just didn't go in for us."

With his final goal Silva finished the season tied with freshman Jorge Chedraui for the team lead in points with 33. Chedraui amassed 15 goals and three assists while Silva added 13 goals and seven assists.

The Sunbirds finish the season 16-5-2 after claiming the school's first ever PacWest Championship in only its second season in Division II.
