Tough PacWest road stretch continues as FPU drops nailbiter

Box Score

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. - Fresno Pacific had its chances but missed key opportunities down the stretch in Saturday night's 66-63 loss at Dominican. FPU battled back from a 64-54 deficit with 3:30 to play to cut the lead to one, but couldn't convert on a couple prime chances in the final seconds as the team fell to 0-4 in PacWest play despite another good showing against one of the league's top teams.

Jackson Carbajal's layup capped off a 9-0 to make it 64-63 with 50 seconds left. The Sunbirds then had a golden opportunity as Malcolm Griffin stole the inbounds pass in the paint, however his attempted pass then went out of bounds to give the ball back to the Penguins. After a Dominican bucket, FPU had one more chance as Trevon Clayton got a wide open look at a game-tying three-pointer from the top of the key, but it went off the rim and a final prayer by Josh Mason would come up short as well.

Malcolm Griffin had 21 points to lead the Sunbirds (5-7, 0-4 PacWest), who have opened up with one of the league's toughest schedules. Carbajal added 15 points and Phil Jackson had 10 rebounds. FPU shot just 35% from the field in the loss.

The Penguins (10-3, 4-1 PacWest) had four players in double figures, led by Devin Golston's 16 points.

The Sunbirds will come out of the break to face former head coach Jim Saia and NAIA nationally-ranked Cal State San Marcos in an exhibition on the road on January 4.
