Rohnert Park, Calif. - Fresno Pacific ran into a hot-shooting Cal State East Bay team on Friday night in the opening game of the Ron Logsdon Classic, falling 82-77 despite leading for much of the game.
The Sunbirds (1-2) out-shot the Pioneers (1-2) from the field (48% to 43%), out-rebounded them 39-33 and outscored them in the paint 42-14, but the Pioneers would emerge victorious behind a 13-for-26 night from beyond the arc and a 19-for-23 clip from the free-throw line.
FPU led 35-29 at halftime and 75-71 with 2:36 remaining before CSUEB outscored the Sunbirds 11-2 over the final two and a half minutes.
"We're just not very good right now and we're not doing the things winning teams do," said head coach Chris Wright. "We need to defend a lot better. We need to move the ball more efficiently and execute better as well. We're also lacking toughness. We have our work cut out for us but we are determined to get better and we are going to need a much better effort tomorrow night against a very good Sonoma State team."
Phil Jackson led the Sunbirds with 20 points.

Jonathan Jefferson posted a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds, going 11-for-13 from the free-throw line.
Jacari Whitfield led all scorers with 24 points to lead the Pioneers.
FPU takes on tournament host Sonoma State tomorrow night.
