Sunbirds scorch Notre Dame de Namur in 6-0 rout

Box Score

A four-goal second half propelled the Sunbirds to their most lopsided win of the season, a 6-0 victory over the Argonauts from Notre Dame de Namur. Gustavo Silva and Alvaro Nogales both recorded four points with a goal and two assists in the explosive offensive night.

Six different Sunbirds (6-2-1, 4-0 PacWest) found the back of the net in the most evenly distributed scoring attack in recent memory against one of the most well organized defenses in the conference in NDNU (4-5-1, 1-2-1 PacWest). Silva, Nogales, Jorge Chedraui, Thiago Novis, Guillermo Talancon and Renato Bustamante all put the ball in the goal. Bustamante and Chedraui remain tied atop the goals list this season for FPU five each.

"This is big for us, its huge. I think some people thought we upset them last season, this year if you look at the roster with how different we are without the offensive fire power going up against a team that lines up so well defensively. We came into this match thinking it was going to be a very good game for both teams," said head coach Jaime Ramirez. "What I was really pleased about was our midfield was fantastic. I thought we played the most complete game of the season as far as our midfield dictating the tempo of the game on both sides of the ball."

All told the Sunbirds shot the ball 25 times, 12 of which landed on goal. The .500 goal percentage on shots on goal is the highest for the Sunbirds this season on a night where offensively they could do no wrong. Conversely the Argonauts were held to just 11 shots only three of which were on goal.

Fabian Rangel and Andrew Luis combined in goal for the shutout, the third in the last four matches for FPU. Rangel finished the match with one save while Luis stopped two shots. The goalkeepers for Fresno Pacific were under little pressure as excellent play along the backline, particularly by Nick Watson, Chris Young and Luke Tyler, kept NDNU at bay for the majority of the match.

For the first 20 minutes of the match it looked as though the crowd at Ramirez Field might be treated to a similar defensive battle that Notre Dame fans saw last year in a 1-0 win for the Sunbirds in Belmont. But, in the 29 th minute Bustamante broke the gridlock and slotted away a perfect cross from Silva for the early 1-0 lead. Talancon made it a 2-0 lead for the Sunbirds in the 34th minute who were just getting warmed up.

After the halftime FPU continued to put pressure on the Argos; pressure that culminated in a Chedraui goal from Adrian Arias in the 50th minute to put the game on ice for the Sunbirds. That wasn't enough for a team looking to make a statement to the PacWest as the Sunbirds scored three goals in the span of three minutes and two in 11-seconds.

"I think the message to the conference is that Fresno Pacific is getting its rhythm," said Ramirez. "We had six different guys score today, whom do you key on? You can't just stop one player or two players, you have to try and stop a whole team."

Fresno Pacific will play an alumni match at home next Wednesday before heading out on a four-game road trip to Hawaii next weekend beginning with a match against Hawaii Hilo.
