Daniel Seymour goals were not enough to overtake two ranked teams on day one of the Santa Clara Rodeo Tournament. FPU fell 16-6 against No. 18 Bucknell before dropping a 14-10 decision to No. 10 Concordia in the afternoon.
"We came out very sluggish and timid in the first game," said head coach
Bryan Suhovy. "I didn't even recognize our team."
A 6-2 first quarter for Bucknell once again put the Sunbirds in a hole they would not be able to climb out of. Seymour and freshman
Steven Kaufmann each scored a pair of goals in the 16-6 loss.
In second match, the Sunbirds again fell behind early as No. 10 Concordia held a 10-2 lead in the first half. FPU fought their way back in the second half scoring four goals in third and fourth quarters. Once again Seymour led the way on offense striking four times in the contest including three times in the fourth quarter.
Kyle Madel and
David Maes each scored twice in the match.
Despite outscoring the Eagles 8-4 in the second half, the Sunbids couldn't complete a comeback in the 14-10 loss. The four-goal loss was the closest loss to any top-10 team in the Sunbirds history.
"It took us a quarter to get going against Concordia," said Suhovy. "If you take away that first quarter we outscored them 10-7 in the last three periods. We are young and gaining experience, but the boys need to figure out how to come out firing from the first whistle."
The Sunbirds fell to 6-12 on the season and return action tomorrow taking on No. 19 Harvard then No. 20 Brown in the Rodeo Tournament at Santa Clara.
