Late surge lifts Sunbirds

Box Score

The Sunbirds scored four second half goals, including three in an 18 minute span, en route to a 5-2 non-conference victory over UC Santa Cruz.

Jorge Chedraui scored twice in the win for FPU (5-2-1) and was one of four different scorers on the night. Joey Belzil and Eric Velarde both scored their second goal of the season and Renato Bustamante scored his team-leading fourth goal. UC Santa Cruz (1-8-1) got goals from Brock Kobayashi and Peter Shelling in the loss.

Early on the Sunbirds dominated possession controlling the match for the first 20 minutes and creating a number of scoring chances. The opportunities culminated in a Bustamante goal on a cross from Alvaro Nogales in the 24th minute. UC Santa Cruz responded well and just five minutes later created a penalty kick opportunity that was converted by Kobayashi.

Just after the half the Sunbirds turned it on scoring in the 50th minute to regain the lead. With the game yet to be decided the offense turned it up again scoring four times in 18 minutes beginning with a Chedraui goal in the 71st minute. Belzil added his goal in the 80th minute on another display of pure speed as the freshman broke behind the defense and lobbed the ball over the keepers head to walk it into the back of the net. Chedraui added one more for good measure on a great setup from Adrian Arias and Martin Kams.

The Sunbirds will bring their attention back to the PacWest when they host Notre Dame de Namur this weekend at Ramirez Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
